The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in camera at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 362 East Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Larry Bagnell, Rick Casson, Hon. Keith Martin, Pat O'Brien, Gordon O'Connor and Gilles-A. Perron.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Dave MacKenzie, Russ Powers for Anthony Rota and Lloyd St. Amand for Hon. Judi Longfield.

 

In attendance: As Individual: Joseph P. Culligan, Consultant. Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner, Analyst; Michel Rossignol, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs, pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), sit jointly with the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, to invite witnesses to determine what Canada was specifically being asked to commit to as a participant in a North American Ballistic Missile Defence Program; and that the Committee invite as a witness to coincide and in conjunction with her visit to Canada, United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

 

It was agreed, — That the Minister of National Defence and the Minister of Veterans Affairs be invited to appear in relation to Main Estimates.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee, in consultation with the Chair, prepare a draft budget respecting the Committee’s proposed Canadian travel in relation to the study on Defence Review, for consideration by the Committee on March 22, 2005.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee, in consultation with the Chair, prepare a draft budget for the Committee's European travel in October 2005 in relation to its study on Defence Review, for consideration by the Committee on March 22, 2005.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee make the necessary arrangements for a reception from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on May 5, 2005 with representatives of the NATO Defence College.

 

At 10:15 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
