The Clerk of the Committee: Honourable members of the committee, I see a quorum. We can now proceed to the election of the chair.

    Are there any nominations?

+-

Mrs. Judi Longfield (Whitby—Ajax, Lib.): I'd like to nominate Walt Lastewka.

+-

The Clerk: Are there any other nominations?

+-

Mr. John Williams (St. Albert, Canadian Alliance): Just in time.

+-

    The Clerk: Mr. Williams.

+-

Mr. John Williams: Who is nominating me?

+-

Mr. Walt Lastewka (St. Catharines, Lib.): I am.

+-

The Clerk: Are you serious, Mr. Lastewka?

+-

Mr. Walt Lastewka: No, I'm never serious.

+-

Mr. John Williams: Oh, come on. I thought this was my day of glory.

+-

Mr. Joe Comuzzi (Thunder Bay—Superior North, Lib.): You're doing a good job on the other committee.

+-

The Clerk: Are there further nominations?

Nominations are closed. There was only one--Mr. Lastewka.

    (Motion agreed to)

+-

Mr. Joe Comuzzi: Mr. Chairman, we don't need a secret ballot, do we?

+-

The Clerk: No, but I do need to proceed to the election of the vice-chair, by secret ballot, if required.

Are there nominations for the post of vice-chair?

+-

Mr. Clifford Lincoln (Lac-Saint-Louis, Lib.): I'd like to nominate Judi Longfield.

+-

The Clerk: Mrs. Longfield is nominated.

    Are there any further nominations?

    (Motion agreed to)

+-

The Clerk: Mrs. Longfield is vice-chair.

I now invite Mr. Lastewka to take the chair.

+-

Mr. John Williams: Aren't there two vice-chairs for this committee, Mr. Clerk?

+-

The Clerk: No, just one, sir.

+-

Mr. John Williams: We're going to have to fix that.

+-

The Chair (Mr. Walt Lastewka): Thank you for instilling your confidence in me for one more term.

+-

Mr. Joe Fontana (London North Centre, Lib.): On division.

+-

The Chair: All right, I'll remember that.

    My vice-chair is Judi Longfield.

I understand we need to pass these motions.

·  -(1315)

+-

    The Clerk: That's correct, yes.

+-

The Chair: We need to pass the motion for a subcommittee, just in case we need to meet as a subcommittee between now and the next while.

The former members of the committee were Reg Alcock--I don't see Reg here; Mauril Bélanger--I know he has a conflict on Tuesdays; Bonnie Brown is here; Joe Fontana is here; Judi Longfield; me; Andy Scott; Tom Wappel; and John Williams. The alternate members were Clifford Lincoln and Gurmant Grewal.

+-

Mr. John Williams: So moved, Mr. Chair.

+-

The Chair: All those in favour of leaving the committee as is?

    (Motion agreed to)

+-

The Chair: We'll pass a motion that the chair and the vice-chair of the subcommittee shall be me and Judi, to make it all official.

    (Motion agreed to)

+-

The Chair: The subcommittee on committee rooms is a new one for me. We never met.

+-

The Clerk: It never met, but it was established last time.

+-

The Chair: Who were the chair and vice-chair?

+-

The Clerk: It never met, so there were no chair or vice-chair.

+-

    The Chair: All right.

Do we want to leave them the same? Do we want to make some changes?

+-

Ms. Bonnie Brown (Oakville, Lib.): So moved as written, Mr. Chair.

+-

The Chair: So moved as written. All those in favour?

+-

Mr. John Williams: Who is the chair and vice-chair?

+-

The Chair: Okay, who were the chair and vice-chair last time?

+-

    The Clerk: There weren't any.

+-

Mr. Raymond Bonin (Nickel Belt, Lib.): I move they determine who their chair and vice-chair are.

+-

    The Chair: Thank you.

    (Motion agreed to)

-

The Chair: Okay, we'll go in camera for our budget process, and we'll bring you a financial report.
