MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 32

Wednesday, March 26, 2003

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met in camera at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Walt Lastewka, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: André Bachand, Larry Bagnell, Paul Crête, Cheryl Gallant, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Walt Lastewka, Serge Marcil, Brian Masse, Dan McTeague, Hon. Gilbert Normand, James Rajotte, Andy Savoy, Brent St. Denis and Joseph Volpe.

Acting Member present: John O’Reilly for Paddy Torsney.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Lalita Acharya, Geoffrey P. Kieley and Dan Shaw, Research Officers.

The Committee proceeded to consider its future business.

At 4:12 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:15 p.m., the sitting resumed.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee consider Bill C-249, An Act to amend the Competition Act on March 31st, April 2nd, 7 and 9, 2003.

It was agreed, -- That according to the motion adopted on February 17, 2003, the Committee summon representatives of the oil companies and other experts so that it can explore possible causes of the recent increase in the price of gasoline, and the significant negative effects that the increase is having on the economy, and can recommend appropriate corrective measures to the federal government on May 5th and 7, June 2nd and 4, 2003.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee resume its study on the Potential Economic Impact on Canadian Industry of Implementing the Kyoto Protocol on April 29 and 30, 2003.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee invites the Minister of Industry and the Secretaries of State on the Main Estimates 2003 – 2004 on May 12, 14, 26 and 28, 2003.

It was agreed, -- That according to the motion adopted on December 3, 2002, the Committee undertake a study on the alleged abuse of the Automatic Injunction Provision within the Patent Act on June 9, 11, 16 and 18, 2003.

It was agreed, -- That the proposed budget in the amount of $10, 214 for the period of January, 28, 2003 to March 21, 2003 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

At 4:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
