The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 209 West Block, for the purpose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

 

Members of the Committee present: Gérard Binet, Claude Duplain, Louis Plamondon, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

 

Acting Members present: Sue Barnes for Rick Laliberte, Garry Breitkreuz for Howard Hilstrom, Murray Calder for John Maloney, Charles Hubbard for Larry McCormick, Gerald Keddy for Rick Borotsik, Paul Harold Macklin for Mark Eyking and Joe Peschisolido for Bob Speller.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the Chair.

 

On motion of Charles Hubbard, it was agreed, — That Paul Steckle be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the Vice-Chairs.

 

On motion of Murray Calder, it was agreed, — That Rose-Marie Ur be elected as Goverment Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

Rick Casson moved, — That Gerry Ritz be elected as Opposition Vice-Chair of the Committee.

Gerald Keddy moved, — That Rick Borotsik be elected as Opposition Vice-Chair of the Committee.

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(3), the election was conducted by secret ballot.

The ballots having been counted, Gerry Ritz was declared duly elected as Opposition Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

Paul Steckle took the Chair.

 

At 3:46 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That a letter be sent to Dr. Bernard Vallat, Director General of the «Office international des épizooties» concerning the BSE situation in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That the Dairy Farmers of Canada be invited to appear before the Committee on September 30, 2003 to discuss the BSE situation in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That representatives of the Canadian Bankers' Association and of various banks be invited to appear before the Committee on a date to be determined to discuss the BSE situation in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee study the Supplementary Estimates (A) 2003-2004, before October 10, 2003.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk plan the budget and itinerary for the Committee's travel to Washington, D.C. in October 2003 and that a briefing session be held for Committee members before departure .

 

At 4:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
