Meeting No. 35

Thursday, June 5, 2003

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Claude Duplain, John Maloney, Dick Proctor, Bob Speller, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, analyst; Jean-Denis Fréchette, analyst.

Witnesses: From the National Farmers Union: Stewart Wells, President; Terry Boehm, Vice-President. From the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities: Neal Hardy, President; Arita McPherson, Director of Agriculture Policy. From the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan Inc.: Ivan Ottenbreit, Director, District I.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of the approval of genetically modified wheat and its effect on Canadian agriculture.

Stewart Wells, Terry Boehm, Neal Hardy and Ivan Ottenbreit made opening statements and, with the other witness, answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., Rose-Marie Ur took the Chair.

At 12:10 p.m., Paul Steckle took the Chair.

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
