Meeting No. 20

Tuesday, April 16, 2002

The Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Carolyn Bennett, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Wendy Lill and Tony Tirabassi.

Acting Members present: Robert Lanctôt for Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Bill Young, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Canadian International Development Agency: Robin McLay, Director, Governance and Social Policies Division; Donna Schwartzburg, Senior Program Analyst, Non-governmental Organizations Division; Kirsten Mlacak, Deputy Director, Human Rights and Social Policy Branch. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Adrian Norfolk, Acting Director, Multilateral Affairs, Human Rights, Humanitarian Affairs and International Women's Equality Division. From the Canadian Association for Community Living: Michael Bach, Vice President; Jean-Claude Jalbert, Board Member; Parteepan Rasaratnam, Self Advocate, Diane Richler. From the Council of Canadians with Disabilities: Laurie Beachell, National Coordinator; David Shannon, Member; Steve Estey, Member. From the As Individual: Joan Westland.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(c) Study of the matters relating to the proposing, promoting, monitoring and assessing of initiatives aimed at the integration and equality of disabled persons in all sectors of Canadian Society – Round table on issues concerning international activities in the area of disability, (See Minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, April 9, 2002, Meeting no. 19).

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

It was agreed, — That the Sub-Committee authorize the Sub-Committee staff to begin development of the enhanced Sub-Committee informational website as part of the Sub-Committee’s upcoming study on issues concerning Canada Pension Plan Disability.

At 5:47 p.m., the Sub-Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
