Thursday, April 25, 2002

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in a televised session at 11:15 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Judi Longfield, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Paul Crête, Reed Elley, Raymonde Folco, Judi Longfield, Gurbax Malhi, Joe McGuire, Monte Solberg, Diane St-Jacques and Alan Tonks.

Acting Member(s) present: Marcel Gagnon for Monique Guay, Yvon Godin for Libby Davies, Dale Johnston forWerner Schmidt, James Rajotte for Larry Spencer, John Harvard for Eugène Bellemare, Roger Cuzner for Raymonde Folco, Derek Lee for Tony Ianno, Steve Mahoney for Serge Macil and Bob Wood for Anita Neville.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr and Bill Young, Research Officers.

Witness(es): From the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission: Cari Dominguez, Chair; Corbett Anderson, Senior Attorney, Office of Legal Council.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference dated December 3rd, 2001 and to section 44 of the Employment Equity Act, the Committee resumed consideration of the statutory review of the Act (See minutes of Proceedings of December11, 2001 – Meeting No.44)

Cari Dominguez made a statement and with the other witness answered questions.

At 12:42 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:45 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The 48 hour notice having been given, Paul Crête moved, -- That the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities hold hearings on the proposed amendments to section 56 of the Employment Insurance Regulations whereby interest would be charged on new and outstanding debts arising from a false statement.

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division:
