Monday, May 29, 2000

The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Lynn Myers, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Yvon Charbonneau, Reed Elley, Ovid Jackson, Bill Matthews, Ted McWhinney, Réal Ménard, Bob Mills, Lynn Myers, Karen Redman, Paul Szabo, Greg Thompson, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member(s) present: Carmen Provenzano for Marcel Proulx, John Finley for Rose-Marie Ur, Monte Solburg for Maurice Vellacott.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier; Tim Williams, Research Officers.

Appearing: From the Health Canada: The Honourable Allan Rock, Minister of Health.

Witnesses: From the Health Canada: David Dodge, Deputy Minister; Marie Fortier, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Consultation Branch and Assistant Deputy Minister, Home Care Development.

The Committee resumed debate on the motion of Bob Mills:

- That the Standing Committee on Health immediately commence a study on all related problems surrounding the state of health care in Canada.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to on the following recorded division.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, - That the motion of Bob Mills, - "That Lynn Myers no longer be Chair of this Committee", be taken up after the Minister's appearance this day, and again on Thursday, June 8, 2000, as necessary.

 

At 3:55 p.m. The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, February 29, 2000, being read as follows:

Ordered, pursuant to Standing Order 81(6) - That the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001 be referred to the Standing Committee on Health as follows: HEALTH, Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20,and 25.

The Minister made a statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:10 p.m. Bob Mills moved, - That Lynn Myers no longer be Chair of this Committee.

After debate, by unanimous consent, the motion was withdrawn.

At 5:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
