Thursday, May 7, 1998.

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food met at 9:12 a.m., this day, in Room

269, West Block, Joe McGuire, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Rick Borotsik, John Harvard, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Members present: John Bryden for Murray Calder and Allan Kerpan for Jay Hill.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch: Sonya Dakers, Research Coordinator and Frédéric Forge, Researcher.

Witnesses: From AGCare (Toronto): Jim Fischer, Chairman. From Canola Council of Canada: Tony Zatylny, Vice-President, Crop Protection. From Soybean Grower's Marketing Board: Tom Lasseline. From Food & Consumer Products Manufacturers of Canada (Toronto): Laurie Curry, Vice-President, Public Policy and Scientific Affairs. From Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors (Halifax): Jeanne Cruikshank, Vice-President, Atlantic Region.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of Biotechnology (Perspective of Products Users), as part of its input into the Renewal of the Canadian Biotechnology Strategy.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:06 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
