The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food met at 9:07 a.m., this day, in Room

112-N, Centre Block, Joe McGuire, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Rick Borotsik, John Harvard, Jay Hill, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Members of the Committee present: Ivan Grose for Gerry Byrne; Charles Hubbard for Denis Coderre and Ovid Jackson for Murray Calder.

Other Member present: John O'Reilly.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch: Sonya Dakers, Research Coordinator, Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist and Frédéric Forge, Researcher.

Appearing: The Honourable Lyle Vanclief, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Frank Claydon, Deputy Minister; Michelle Comeau, Associate Deputy Minister; Douglas D. Hedley, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister. From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Art Olson, President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4) and the Order of Reference of the House dated February 26, 1998, relating to the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999, being read as follows:

Ordered: That the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999, laid upon the Table on February 26, 1998, be referred to the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food, Votes, 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25.

The Minister made an opening statement and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:54 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
