The Honourable Rob Moore, P.C., M.P. Dear Mr. Moore: On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to respond to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage’s report entitled Review of National Protocol Procedures. I would like to commend the Standing Committee for its work on this report, and convey my appreciation to all of those who appeared before the Committee to share their views. On the road to 2017, Canadians will have many opportunities to commemorate several key nation‑building milestones, such as the 100th anniversary of the First World War, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir John A. Macdonald and George‑Étienne Cartier, as well as the centennial of women’s suffrage. The implementation of appropriate protocol plays an important part in events like these. Consequently, the timing of this report could not have been better. The Government accepts the Standing Committee’s eight recommendations. A protocol framework and guidelines are being prepared and will be posted on the Department of Canadian Heritage’s website in 2013. A communications approach will also be developed to promote awareness of the framework. To date, a number of federal and provincial partners as well as non-governmental organizations have been consulted. The results of these consultations will be an integral part of the development of the protocol framework.
