Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • The Islamic Republic of Iran is using extreme violence to terrorize its political opponents, including the peaceful participants in the "Women Life Freedom" movement;
  • The Islamic Republic of Iran has cleared the way to an alarming increase in executions by suspending the rights guaranteed in its own Constitution (Amnesty International reports at least 853 executions in 2023 – 172% more than 2021 – and at least 95 more by March 20, 2024);
  • The Islamic Republic of Iran has contravened the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which it ratified in 1975; and
  • Canada has since 2007 supported all United Nations (UN) resolutions calling for a global moratorium on executions, with the goal of the universal abolition of the death penalty.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Redouble its pressure on Iran, in concert with the UN General Assembly, the G8, the European Union, et al., to fully comply with the ICCPR, which affirms (i) the universal right to life and (ii) the necessity of that right being protected by national and international law;
2. Call for an immediate moratorium on executions;
3. Call for Iran’s full and transparent compliance with the UN Special Rapporteur in Iran and UN Fact-Finding Mission on Iran in their investigations of its human rights situation;
4. Call on the Supreme Leader to hold his officials fully accountable for their role in all human rights abuses;
5. Publicly assure the People of Iran of Canada’s support of their civil and political rights.
