Petition to the Government of Canada
- The goal is to limit global warming to below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels, as established through the Paris Agreement;
- The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2018 special report warns of extreme weather and dire living conditions if global warming exceeds 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels;
- The Government of Canada’s current targets for reducing green house gas emissions fall far short of its commitment under the Paris Agreement, including the absence of a target for the year 2025 and by allowing continued emissions through offset mechanisms in its 2050 target to reach ''net zero'';
- Government targets are not based on objective, scientific information; and
- The federal government emissions-reporting plan fails to address unreservedly the urgency of the climate crisis by delaying the accountability period to 2030.
