Petition to the House of Commons
- The Safe Third Country Agreement states that only countries that respect human rights and offer a high degree of protection to asylum seekers may be designated as safe third countries;
- The President of the United States, has purposely and pre-meditatively adopted practices including a ‘Muslim travel ban’, and forcibly separating children from their parents seeking asylum;
- The United States no longer recognizes domestic violence or gang violence as legitimate reasons for asylum;
- The United States has adopted a ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy designating all irregular border crossers claiming asylum as having committed a criminal act subject to prosecution;
- Under Donald Trump as President, the United States has demonstrated it will continue to ignore international human rights and refugee laws; and
- Remaining in the Safe Third Country Agreement infers that Canada views those policies to be acceptable treatment of asylum seekers and children.
