Petition to the Government of Canada
- Stated by the Prime Minister, the Government of Canada is committed to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and enacting all 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
- In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission called on the federal government to collaborate with Indigenous peoples to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour residential school survivors, their families, and communities, as per Call to Action #80.
- The date for such a holiday could be June 2nd, the day that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its final report in 2015
- The Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls on the government to ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.
- The experiences of survivors and victims of residential schools should be remembered and honoured by the Canadian public.
