Cornerstone

On Sept. 1, 1860, the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII laid the cornerstone of Canada’s original Parliament building. On Oct. 13, The London Illustrated News published a centrefold ink-print of a drawing by G.H. Andrews that brought the grand scene to British eyes eager for news from the colony. The prince and officials from both sides of the Atlantic stand beneath an open canopy that is festooned with the Union Jack and Red Ensign flags, draped with garlands and crowned with an enormous, feathered finial. After fire destroyed the building in 1916, the cornerstone was salvaged and laid in for the new Parliament building.
