A Study of Aircraft Certification in Canada in Light of Two Incidents Involving Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302

Ottawa, June 09, 2021 -

Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities presented to the House of Commons a report entitled A Study of Aircraft Certification in Canada in Light of Two Incidents Involving Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.

During its study, extended over two sessions of Parliament, the committee reviewed the process for certifying and validating aircraft in Canada, with particular attention to the case of the Boeing 737 MAX. It heard testimony from 28 witnesses and received one brief from stakeholders.

The report contains 14 recommendations to the Government of Canada to further strengthen Canada’s world-leading certification process.

“On behalf of the committee, I want to thank the witnesses who appeared and who contributed their time, thoughts and expertise,” stated Vance Badawey, Chair of the committee. He added: “In particular, I want to extend the committee’s sincere appreciation for the valuable contributions made by witnesses who lost family members in the tragic incident involving Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302. This report is dedicated to the memory of all those who lost their lives on Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.”

The report is available on the committee’s web page on the Parliament of Canada website.
