Environment Committee Embarks on Ambitious Work Plan

Ottawa, April 20, 2016 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development is pleased to announce that it has unanimously agreed to undertake the following four initial studies during the 42nd Parliament:

1) An assessment of the Federal Sustainable Development Act along with a review of its related Strategy;

2) A review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999; and

3) An assessment of federal protected areas and conservation objectives;

4) An examination of measures necessary for Canada to fairly contribute to international efforts to limit global temperature rise, including a section on clean energy and clean technology.

The complete text of the motions passed describing each study is available on the Committee’s website.

Chaired by Ms. Deb Schulte, M.P., the Committee comprises: Liberals John Aldag, William Amos, Mike Bossio, Darren Fisher and Mark Gerretsen; Conservatives Jim Eglinski (Vice-Chair), Ed Fast, and Martin Shields; and from the New Democratic Party, Nathan Cullen (Vice-Chair).

“The Committee has begun its work in a transparent and collegial fashion. These studies have been chosen because we believe that these issues are important to tackle in order to improve environmental outcomes and achieve sustainable development goals,” said the Chair. “The Committee has completed its study on the Federal Sustainable Development Act and will report on its findings before the summer. It has also initiated its review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 and looks forward to starting the other two studies in the near future. ”

The Committee welcomes written briefs for consideration as part of any of its studies. It may also be possible to appear before the Committee in person.
