House International Trade Committee Releases Report on Canadian Priorities Regarding E-Commerce and International Trade

Ottawa, April 26, 2018 -

Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade presented its report entitled E-Commerce: Certain Trade-Related Priorities of Canada’s Firms. It contains 11 recommendations about such themes as the taxation of e-commerce and other activities, cybersecurity, e-commerce–related training and education, federal support for firms that wish to use e-commerce and engage in international trade, digital infrastructure, certain postal rates, federal legislation relating to e-commerce, and competition among providers of mobile telecommunication services in Canada.

“E-commerce is changing how Canadians buy and sell goods and services. In today’s rapidly evolving world, supporting and promoting the use of e-commerce can help the country’s firms, including those of small and medium size, to export around the world. As well, it can help Canada’s consumers access the products that they want,” said the Honourable Mark Eyking, P.C., M.P., Chair of the Committee.

Mr. Eyking concluded: “The Committee believes that implementing the recommendations contained in the report that we tabled today in the House of Commons will help Canada’s consumers and firms engage in e-commerce, and will thereby increase the value of the country’s international trade. Implementation of the recommendations would also help to ensure that taxes, rules and regulations relating to e-commerce are appropriate.”

The Committee’s report can be accessed on its website.
