News Release in Relation to the Report Entitled: "Support for Indigenous Peoples in the Agriculture and Agri-Food Industry"

Ottawa, May 31, 2019 -

On 28 May 2019, the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food tabled a report on supporting Indigenous Canadians in the agriculture and agri-food industry. It is the Committee’s 17th report.

The report provides five recommendations that suggest ways to better support Indigenous communities that farm or work in the agri-food sector.

“Through this study, the Committee learned about many local initiatives that have been set up in various regions across Canada in recent years to develop farming businesses,” said Pat Finnigan, Chair of the Committee. However, as the report indicates, limited access to capital, land and high-quality agricultural infrastructure are major barriers to developing agriculture and agri-food businesses in Indigenous communities.

In this report, the Committee recommends working with Indigenous communities to examine how support for entrepreneurship and exports, as well as financial support, could be improved in the agriculture and agri-food industry. The report also identifies the importance of recognizing the role of traditional and local foods in supporting the health of Indigenous peoples.
