HOUSE INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMITTEE RELEASES REPORT ON COMPREHENSIVE ECONOMIC AND TRADE AGREEMENT BETWEEN CANADA AND THE EUROPEAN UNION

Ottawa, June 18, 2014 -

According to a report by the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade, which was presented to the House of Commons today, the Government of Canada should publish the text of the comprehensive economic and trade agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union (EU) as soon as it is initialed, and take all possible actions to ensure that the CETA’s provisions enter into force as quickly as possible.

The report contains nine recommendations that are designed to encourage economic co-operation and activity between Canada and the EU, as well as to support Canadian businesses wanting to enter the EU market.

“Most of the 88 witnesses representing 64 organizations who made presentations to the Committee supported a Canada-EU CETA, and I believe that implementation of the Committee’s recommendations will allow Canadian consumers and businesses to benefit from the preferential access to the largest market in the world, as well as from increased access to EU products and the region’s supply chains,” said the Hon. Rob Merrifield, Chair of the Committee.

He concluded: “The Committee’s primary objective during this study was to ensure that an agreement between Canada and the EU, once signed and implemented, would be in the best interests of Canadians. In that regard, on behalf of the Committee, I wish to thank the groups and individuals who shared their thoughts about the Canada–EU CETA.”

The Committee held hearings in Ottawa, Halifax and Vancouver from November 2013 to March 2014 in order to obtain input from Canadian stakeholders about the technical summary of the final negotiated outcomes in relation to the Canada–EU CETA and the expected outcomes of a ratified CETA between both parties.
