January 26, 2009 — Resuming the adjourned debate on the motion of Mrs. O'Neill-Gordon (Miramichi), seconded by Mrs. Block (Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar), — That the following Address be presented to Her Excellency the Governor General of Canada:
To Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order of Canada, Chancellor and Commander of the Order of Military Merit, Chancellor and Commander of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada.
MAY IT PLEASE YOUR EXCELLENCY:
We, Her Majesty's most loyal and dutiful subjects, the House of Commons of Canada, in Parliament assembled, beg leave to offer our humble thanks to Your Excellency for the gracious Speech which Your Excellency has addressed to both Houses of Parliament.

Ways and Means

No. 1 — January 29, 2009 — Resuming consideration of the motion of Mr. Flaherty (Minister of Finance), seconded by Mr. Baird (Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities), — That this House approve in general the budgetary policy of the government;
And of the amendment of Mr. Ignatieff (Etobicoke—Lakeshore), seconded by Ms. Bennett (St. Paul's), — That the motion be amended by adding the following:
“, on condition that the Government table reports in Parliament no later than five sitting days before the last alloted day in each of the supply periods ending March 26, 2009, June 23, 2009 and December 10, 2009:
(a) to provide on-going economic and fiscal updates;
(b) to detail the actual implementation of the budget;
(c) to itemize the actual effects of the budget with respect to:
- the protection of the most vulnerable in Canadian society,
- the minimizing of existing job losses,
- the creation of the employment opportunities of tomorrow,
- the provision of economic stimilus in a manner fair to all regions of Canada, and
- the assurance that the Government's deficit is not a burden to future generations or a detriment to economic recovery; and
(d) to provide details on any adjustments or new measures as may be required to benefit the Canadian economy.”.
