The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Guy Lauzon, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymonde Folco, Yvon Godin, Luc Harvey, Guy Lauzon, Pierre Lemieux, Luc Malo, Richard Nadeau and Pablo Rodriguez.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst; Élise Hurtubise-Loranger, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Gordon O'Connor, Minister of National Defence; Hon. Josée Verner, Minister for la Francophonie and Official Languages.

 

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: R.J. Hillier, Chief of the Defence Staff. Department of Canadian Heritage: Judith A. LaRocque, Deputy Minister. Department of National Defence: J.L. Milot, Director of Official Languages.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f)and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 13, 2007, the Committee commenced its study of Official Languages policy for senior military officials of National Defence.
 

Hon. Josée Verner and Hon. Gordon O'Connor made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:28 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:31 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Notice having been given pursuant to the Order of the Committee of May 9, 2007, Raymonde Folco moved, — That whereas, in June 2006, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Fondation canadienne pour le dialogue des cultures, and the Fédération des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique signed a protocol for collaboration establishing that the Fédération des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique would be the primary liaison agency for the British Columbia francophone community, and that the British Columbia francophone community would play a crucial role in welcoming participants to the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver; Pursuant to Standing Order 108(1), that the Chair of the Official Languages Committee draft a letter for the Minister of Canadian Heritage in order to inform her of the Committee's support for the request from the Fédération Francophone de la Colombie-Britannique to continue to receive stable funding for its project to coordinate the participation of the British Columbia francophone community in the 2010 Olympic Games, from 2007 to 2010.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by adding the words “the Minister of la Francophonie and Official Languages” after the words “Minister of Canadian Heritage”.

 

It was agreed, — That pursuing its study of the draft report on the Vitality on Official Language Minority Communities the Committee study the recommendations before studying the text paragraph by paragraph.

 

At 10:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
