M-149 Implementation of recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Motion Text

That, in the opinion of the House, the government should consider the advisability of, in consultation with survivors, Indigenous organizations, and the arts community: (a) taking immediate action to implement Recommendation 79(i) of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action to amend the Historic Sites and Monuments Act to include First Nations, Inuit and Métis representation on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada and its Secretariat; (b) directing the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to implement Recommendation 79(ii) of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action to revise the policies, criteria and practices of the National Program of Historical Commemoration to integrate Indigenous history, heritage values, and memory practices into Canada’s national heritage and history; (c) leading the implementation of Recommendation 79(iii) of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action to develop and implement a national heritage plan and strategy for commemorating residential school sites, the history and legacy of residential schools, and the contribution of Aboriginal peoples to Canada’s history; and (d) taking steps to support the development and implementation of a strategy specific to Indigenous peoples to recognize and commemorate Indigenous heritage based on Indigenous perspectives of heritage.
