Quantum Computing

Ottawa, September 28, 2022 -

On the 28th September 2022, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry and Technology, presented its Sixth Report in the House of Commons entitled How can Canada Remain a Leader in the Global Quantum Marathon.

Members of the Committee shared their thoughts regarding the report:

"Research into quantum technologies has contributed to key advances in computer chip design, satellite navigation systems (GPS), nuclear power, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As quantum technology and its applications continue to evolve, Canada can and should play a critical role in advancing the quantum sector. Thank you to all of the witness who informed this study and to the members for your work. The committee looks forward to the government's response." Joël Lightbound, Chair of the Committee

"We are barely scratching the surface of what quantum technologies have to offer in the fields of science, economics and artificial intelligence. As a result, we owe it to the economy of tomorrow to roll out a major strategy today that includes attracting and working with top talent in these fields. Scaling up investments and developing a strategic vision would spark countless basic and applied research projects that could benefit SMEs. A number of witnesses, including representatives from the University of Sherbrooke, showed us that Quebec is a world leader in quantum science. " Sébastien Lemire, Vice Chair of the Committee

"Canada is a global leader in the field of quantum computing, and our country's leadership in this field on the world stage needs to continue. Conservatives recognize the value that advancements in quantum computing present, while also being mindful of the need to be proactive on the security implications in protecting our nation's financial sector, secure communications, and other critical infrastructure." Michael Kram, Vice-Chair of the Committee

“Quantum computing is yet another field where Canada has a research, education, and innovation lead due to the significant efforts of Canadians across the country. To benefit from all the endeavours that have been undertaken it is essential that the government implements a National Quantum Strategy to ensure the business formation and employment opportunities from this sector happen domestically. Action is needed now to not let yet any industry, where we have the initiative, be lost to other countries that seize it due to government neglect,” Brian Masse, Member of the Committee from the New Democratic Party.

The Committee held five meetings on this topic between March and June 2022, during which it heard from 20 witnesses and received two briefs.

The report is available on the Committee’s website.
