Implications of Artificial Intelligence Technologies for the Canadian Labour Force
Ottawa, May 07, 2024 -
Today, Michael Coteau, Member of Parliament for Don Valley East and member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, presented the Committee’s 19th report in the House of Commons.
Entitled Implications of Artificial Intelligence Technologies for the Canadian Labour Force, the report follows a motion adopted by the Committee on June 2nd, 2023. This motion required the Committee to undertake a study examining the implications of artificial intelligence for the Canadian labour force in different regions, organized labour, workforce sectors, people of diverse age groups, genders, income levels and races, and persons with disabilities.
During its study, the Committee heard about the potential impacts artificial intelligence could have on productivity and growth, privacy, and workers with diverse identities, as well as training and supports issues for workplaces. It makes eight recommendations to the Government of Canada aimed at strengthening the ways in which workers are protected, the ethical adoption of artificial intelligence, and better data collection.
The Committee is composed of 12 members of Parliament. It is chaired by Robert Morrissey (Egmont) and its vice-chairs are Louise Chabot (Thérèse-De Blainville) and Tracy Gray (Kelowna—Lake Country). The other members are: Scott Aitchison (Parry Sound—Muskoka); Chad Collins (Hamilton East—Stoney Creek); Michael Coteau (Don Valley East); Rosemarie Falk (Battlefords—Lloydminster); Michelle Ferreri (Peterborough—Kawartha); Peter Fragiskatos (London North Centre); Wayne Long (Saint John—Rothesay); Tony Van Bynen (Newmarket—Aurora) and Bonita Zarrillo (Port Moody—Coquitlam).
