Supporting Canada’s flight schools

Ottawa, April 09, 2019 -

Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities presented to the House of Commons a report entitled Supporting Canada’s Flight Schools.

During its study, the committee examined the various challenges currently facing Canada’s flight schools, particularly in the context of a global pilot shortage. It heard testimony from 26 witnesses and received 13 briefs from stakeholders.

The report contains 12 recommendations to the Government of Canada to support flight schools in providing qualified pilots to the Canadian aviation industry. These recommendations aim to provide additional direct support to flight schools and students, as well as to encourage the modernization of Canada’s flight training regulations to reflect recent and ongoing advances in both technology and educational methods.

The Chair of the committee, the Honourable Judy Sgro, P.C., M.P., extended the Committee’s appreciation to the various witnesses who appeared and who contributed their time, thoughts and expertise. She said: “During this study, witnesses from throughout the aviation industry provided members with many different perspectives on what is clearly an important and global issue. With their assistance, the Committee has prepared a series of recommendations to support Canada’s aviation industry during a worldwide pilot shortage, while continuing to ensure the highest quality of flight training.”

The report is available on the Committee’s web page on the Parliament of Canada website. Individuals who do not have access to an electronic version can obtain a copy of the report from the Committee Cerk.
