The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in a televised session at 1:08 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Tyrone Benskin, Hon. Irwin Cotler, Nina Grewal, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid, Gary Ralph Schellenberger and David Sweet.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Judy Sgro.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Erin Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: United Nations Human Rights Council: Ahmed Shaheed, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Geneva, Switzerland.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Subcommittee proceeded to a briefing with Ahmed Shaheed, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
 

Ahmed Shaheed made a statement and answered questions.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

At 2:02 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 2:03 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $2,250, for the study of the Human Rights Situation in North Korea, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $2,650, for the study of Arbitrary Detention and Political Opposition in Venezuela, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That, notwithstanding the motion adopted on Thursday, October 23, 2014, Lilian Tintori, wife of Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, and Jared Genser, international human rights lawyer and counsel to Leopoldo Lopez, be invited to appear in person on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, to discuss arbitrary detention and political opposition in Venezuela.

 

At 2:10 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
