The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Mike Wallace, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Françoise Boivin, Patrick Brown, Sean Casey, Bob Dechert, Robert Goguen, Ève Péclet, Kyle Seeback, Mike Wallace and David Wilks.

 

Acting Members present: Yvon Godin for Pierre Jacob.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Gruescu, Analyst; Dominique Valiquet, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Justice: Michel Francoeur, Director and General Counsel, Official Languages Directorate; Renée Soublière, Senior Counsel, Litigation Coordinator and Supervisor, Official Languages Directorate. Public Prosecution Service of Canada: Robert Doyle, Senior Counsel and Chief, Executive Secretariat.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Monday, October 21, 2013, the Committee commenced the statutory review of Part XVII of the Criminal Code.
 

Michel Francoeur, Renée Soublière and Robert Doyle made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the Second Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure. The Report was concurred in and read as follows:

Your Subcommittee met on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1. That the Committee invite officials from the Department of Justice to appear before the Committee in relation to the statutory review of Part XVII of the Criminal Code.

2. That the Clerk be authorized to distribute the responses received up to this date, to a Committee letter sent on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, to all the Ministers of Justice of all 10 Canadian provinces and three territories.

3. That the Committee invite all Ministers of Justice of the Canadian provinces and territories who responded to the said letter sent on Tuesday, November, 5, 2013.

 

At 12:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
