The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Robert Chisholm, Ryan Cleary, Patricia Davidson, Randy Kamp, François Lapointe, Ryan Leef, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Robert Sopuck and Rodney Weston.

 

Acting Members present: Mark Adler for John Weston and Patrick Brown for Randy Kamp.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Thai Nguyen, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Kevin Stringer, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Ecosystems and Fisheries Management; Nadia Bouffard, Director General, External Relations, Strategic Policy; Eric Gilbert, Director General, Aquaculture Management; Jean Landry, Director, Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

François Lapointe gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee hold a meeting, before the summer adjournment, to address mounting public and scientific concerns over the immediate threat posed by seismic exploratory work, geotechnical drilling and other exploratory work to be conducted within the marine environment to species listed under the Species At Risk Act and other vulnerable species in the Gros-Cacouna region of the St. Lawrence River; that Department of Fisheries and Oceans officials be invited to that meeting to provide the Committee with a complete list of the conditions the Department established for this work, along with the scientific basis upon which these conditions are based and to respond to questions in this regard, and clarify which activities, if any, would have been subject to a federal environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act prior to its repeal; and that the Committee report its conclusions and its recommendations to the House of Commons.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, the Committee commenced its study of the use of eco-certification in wild-capture and aquaculture fisheries.
 

Kevin Stringer made a statement and, with Nadia Bouffard and Eric Gilbert, answered questions.

 

At 4:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
