The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 8:53 a.m. this day, in Room 228, The Valour Building, the Chair, Hélène LeBlanc, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Niki Ashton, John Barlow, Joan Crockatt, Kirsty Duncan, Hélène LeBlanc, Djaouida Sellah, Susan Truppe and Wai Young.

 

Acting Members present: Phil McColeman for Tilly O'Neill Gordon and Terence Young for Tilly O'Neill Gordon.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Network of Women's Shelters and Transition Houses: Lise Martin, Executive Director. Ernestine's Women's Shelter: Sharlene Tygesen, Executive Director. Armagh House: Lynn Ward, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, October 1, 2014 and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 30, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of promising practices to prevent violence against women.
 

Lise Martin, Sharlene Tygesen and Lynn Ward made statements and answered questions.

 

Niki Ashton moved, — That the mandate of the study of promising practices to prevent violence against women be expanded to include the study of a national action plan to address violence against women, including an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women.

 

Susan Truppe moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Stella Ambler, John Barlow, Joan Crockatt, Phil McColeman, Susan Truppe, Wai Young — 6; NAYS: Niki Ashton, Kirsty Duncan, Djaouida Sellah — 3.

 

At 10:09 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:11 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

At 10:20 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:20 a.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

 

At 10:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
