The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 8:45 a.m. this day, in Room 268, The Valour Building, the Chair, Hélène LeBlanc, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Niki Ashton, John Barlow, Joan Crockatt, Kirsty Duncan, Hélène LeBlanc, Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Djaouida Sellah, Susan Truppe and Wai Young.

 

Acting Members present: Phil McColeman for Wai Young.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Statistics Canada: Cathy Connors, Director, Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics; Kathy AuCoin, Chief, Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics. Status of Women Canada: Linda Savoie, Senior Director General, Women's Program and Regional Operations Directorate. Public Health Agency of Canada: Kimberly Elmslie, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Branch. Department of Justice: Pamela Arnott, Director and Senior Counsel, Policy Centre for Victim Issues; Gillian Blackell, Senior Counsel and Coordinator, Children's Law and Family Violence Policy Unit.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, October 1, 2014 and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 30, 2014, the Committee commenced its study of promising practices to prevent violence against women.
 

Cathy Connors, Linda Savoie, Kimberly Elmslie, Pamela Arnott and Gillian Blackell made statements and, with Kathy AuCoin, answered questions.

 

Niki Ashton moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 81(5), the Committee invite the Minister of Status of Women to appear for a two-hour televised meeting on the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2014-15 before Friday, November 28, 2014.

 

Susan Truppe moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 3.

 

At 10:39 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:40 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

At 10:43 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
