The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, Bev Shipley, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Malcolm Allen, Alex Atamanenko, Hon. Mark Eyking, Richard M. Harris, Randy Hoback, LaVar Payne, Joe Preston, Francine Raynault, Bev Shipley and Bob Zimmer.

 

Acting Members present: Wladyslaw Lizon for Pierre Lemieux, Brian Masse for Ruth Ellen Brosseau and David Sweet for LaVar Payne.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Khamla Heminthavong, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Meat Council: James Laws, Executive Director. Canadian Cattlemen's Association: John Masswohl, Director, Government and International Relations. Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance: Kathleen Sullivan, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, the Committee commenced its study of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the effects of it on the Canadian agriculture sector.
 

Kathleen Sullivan, John Masswohl and James Laws made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:13 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a study on the changes to the U.S. rule on country of origin labeling (COOL).

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee travel to Washington, D.C., in the Fall 2013, in relation to its study on the changes to the U.S. rule on country of origin labeling (COOL).

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $22,917.50 for the Committee’s travel to Washington, D.C., in the Fall 2013, in relation to its study on the changes to the U.S. rule on country of origin labeling (COOL) be adopted, and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to its study on the changes to the U.S. rule on country of origin labeling (COOL), the Committee defray the hospitality expenses related to its travel to Washington, D.C. in the Fall, 2013.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to its study on the changes to the U.S. rule on country of origin labeling (COOL), the Committee be authorized to purchase up to $150.00 in gifts to be presented to foreign hosts during its trip to Washington, D.C., in the Fall, 2013.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $6,400.00, for the study of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the effects of it on the Canadian agriculture sector, be adopted.

 

At 5:27 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
