The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, David Anderson, Leon Benoit, Blaine Calkins, Claude Gravelle, Peter Julian, Ryan Leef, Laurin Liu, Jamie Nicholls and Brad Trost.

 

Acting Members present: Candice Bergen for Royal Galipeau and Hon. John McKay for Marc Garneau.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Isabelle Dumas, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst; Milana Simikian, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Alberta Innovates Technology Futures: Mary Pat Barry, Vice-President, Communications; Brent Lakeman, General Manager. International Energy Agency: Keisuke Sadamori, Director, Directorate of Energy Markets and Security; Adam Brown, Energy Analyst, Renewable Energy Division; Anne-Sophie Corbeau, Gas Analyst. Gradek Energy Inc.: Thomas Gradek, President. Titanium Corporation: Scott Nelson, President and Chief Executive Officer.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Blaine Calkins moved, — That the debate on the motion to study the economic impact of Alberta's energy sector be suspended until 12:45 p.m. today.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on October 4, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of innovation in the energy sector.
 

Scott Nelson, Brent Lakeman, by videoconference from Calgary, Alberta, Keisuke Sadamori, by videoconference from Paris, France, and Thomas Gradek made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:47 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:49 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Blaine Calkins moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 12:49 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:50 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee, in light of the comments by Senior Liberal MP David McGuinty and Liberal leadership candidate Justin Trudeau, conduct hearings on the economic benefits that flow from Alberta's energy sector across Canada; that Members of Parliament David McGuinty and Justin Trudeau be invited as witnesses to explain their comments; and that the Committee report its findings to the House in order to ensure that all Members of Parliament and Canadians are informed of these economic benefits.

 

At 12:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
