The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, James Bezan, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Chris Alexander, James Bezan, Tarik Brahmi, Corneliu Chisu, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Matthew Kellway, Hon. John McKay, Christine Moore, Rick Norlock and Mark Strahl.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Judy Sgro for Hon. John McKay and Bernard Trottier for Ted Opitz.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Wolfgang Koerner, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst. House of Commons: Michelle Tittley, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research: Alice Aiken, Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 29, 2011, the Committee resumed its study of the Care of Ill and Injured Canadian Forces Members.
 

Alice Aiken made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Second Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, which read as follows, be concurred in:

1. That the Committee hear from witnesses related to its study on the Care of ill and injured Canadian Forces members on the occasion of Mental Health Week at its next meeting, scheduled for Thursday, October 4, 2012.

2. That the Committee consider a letter dated Thursday, September 6, 2012, from the Department of National Defence, regarding a request pursuant to the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act at its next meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 4, 2012.

3. That the Committee hear witnesses related to its study on NATO's Strategic Concept and Canada's Role in International Defence Cooperation, from Tuesday, October 16, 2012 to Tuesday, October 30, 2012, pending the availability of witnesses; and that the Committee resume consideration of a draft report on Maintaining the Readiness of the Canadian Forces from Thursday, October 4, 2012 to Thursday, October 18, 2012, and, if required, from Tuesday, October 23, 2012 to Tuesday, October 30, 2012.

4. That the Committee resume its study related to the Care of ill and injured Canadian Forces members from Thursday, November 1, 2012 through Tuesday, November 6, 2012, and that members of the Committee submit to the Clerk lists of requested witnesses, provided that the Committee shall first seek to meet with Brigadier-General Jean-Robert Bernier, Surgeon General and Commander, Canadian Forces Health Services Group.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the Committee’s study of the Care of ill and injured Canadian Forces members, members of the Committee submit to the Clerk lists of requested witnesses no later than Friday, October 19, 2012.

At 5:07 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 29, 2011, the Committee resumed its study of maintaining the readiness of the Canadian Forces.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

At 5:09 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
