The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, for the prupose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

 

Members of the Committee present: Dan Albas, Françoise Boivin, Raymond Côté, Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, Robert Goguen, Pierre Jacob, Brian Jean, Dave MacKenzie, Brent Rathgeber, Craig Scott and Kyle Seeback.

 

Acting Members present: Sean Casey for Hon. Irwin Cotler.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Jean Michel Roy, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: Cynthia Kirkby, Analyst; Dominique Valiquet, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Françoise Boivin, it was agreed, — That Dave MacKenzie be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

By unanimous consent and pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the Vice-Chairs.

 

On motion of Robert Goguen, it was agreed, — That Françoise Boivin be elected First-Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

On motion of Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, it was agreed, — That Irwin Cotler be elected Second Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

Dave MacKenzie took the Chair.

 
By unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee study Bill C-36, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (elder abuse), by inviting the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Rob Nicholson and Senior Officials on Thursday, September 27, 2012;

That the Committee hear witnesses on Bill C-36, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (elder abuse), on Tuesday, October 2, Thursday October 4 and Tuesday October 16, 2012, if necessary;

That the clause by clause consideration of Bill C-36, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (elder abuse), commence on Tuesday, October 16, 2012.

 

At 3:39 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
