The Standing Committee on Health met in a video recorded session at 8:45 a.m. this day, in Room C-120, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Parm Gill, Wladyslaw Lizon, Dany Morin, Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

 

Acting Members present: Ted Hsu for Hon. Hedy Fry.

 

Associate Members present: Harold Albrecht.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention: Dammy Damstrom-Albach, President. Lesbian Gay Bi Trans Youth Line: Jennifer Fodden, Executive Director. University of Western Ontario: Marnin Heisel, Associate Professor and Research Scientist, Department of Psychiatry and Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. As individuals: Denise Batters; Brian Mishara, Director, Centre for Research and Intervention on Suicide and Euthanasia, Université du Québec à Montréal.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, February 15, 2012, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-300, An Act respecting a Federal Framework for Suicide Prevention.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:32 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Anne Minh-Thu Quach moved, — That the Committee undertake a study of improved drug safety measures; that it hold at least five (5) meetings on this study to hear witnesses, including the Minister of Health; and that it report its findings to the House of Commons.

 

Dany Morin moved, — That the motion be amended by adding between the words “improved drug safety measures” and the words “; that it hold at least five (5) meetings” the following: “and that it also establish a federal plan to address the current drug shortage”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 10:46 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
