The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera at 8:56 a.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Robert Chisholm, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Robert Chisholm, Patricia Davidson, Fin Donnelly, Randy Kamp, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Robert Sopuck, Philip Toone, Jonathan Tremblay, John Weston and Stephen Woodworth.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Thai Nguyen, Analyst; Tim Williams, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the analysts retained by the Committee be tasked with preparing a draft version of the Committee’s report to the House regarding the study on aquatic invasive species that pose a threat to the Great Lakes system, with recommendations including, but not limited to, the following:

That the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) network with international partners to determine best practices for the management of aquatic invasive species;

That the Canadian Government encourage the American Government to continue and expand their various efforts to restrict the spread of aquatic invasive species, especially Asian carps, into Canada;

That DFO develop a long-term framework and funding strategy for aquatic invasive species;

That the Government of Canada coordinate with provincial partners to increase enforcement on the illegal live trade of invasive species, such as Asian carps and Northern snakehead;

That DFO support the development of new methods to manage sea lamprey;

That the Government of Canada consider the implementation of a hull fouling policy; and

That the analysts provide a confidential, draft numbered report to the Committee for consideration no later than January 31, 2013.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, the Committee resumed its study of closed containment salmon aquaculture.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

At 10:46 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
