The Standing Committee on Finance met in a televised session at 5:58 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, James Rajotte, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mark Adler, Hon. Scott Brison, Alain Giguère, Shelly Glover, Randy Hoback, Hoang Mai, Wayne Marston, Cathy McLeod, Peggy Nash, James Rajotte and Dave Van Kesteren.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Brian Jean.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mark Mahabir, Analyst. House of Commons: David-Andrés Novoa, Procedural Clerk.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the request by four (4) members of the Committee to undertake a study of the Current Debt Crisis and Economic Turmoil in the United States and Europe, and its Potential Impact on Canada.
 

Randy Hoback moved, — That the Committee undertake a study on the current debt crisis and economic turmoil in the United States and Europe, and its potential impact on Canada; and that the Committee invite the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Canada or a representative to appear before it on Friday, August 19, 2011.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Peggy Nash moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “representative” the following: “and a panel of economists”.

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Peggy Nash and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 11; NAYS: 0.

 

At 6:36 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
