The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, for the purpose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Joyce Bateman, Ruth Ellen Brosseau, Mylène Freeman, Ed Holder, Roxanne James, Irene Mathyssen, Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Susan Truppe and Wai Young.

 

Acting Members present: Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet for Niki Ashton and Joyce Murray for Hon. Judy Sgro.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst. House of Commons: Julie Lalande Prud'homme, Procedural Clerk.

 
The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Tilly O'Neill Gordon, it was agreed, — That Irene Mathyssen be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

Irene Mathyssen took the Chair.

 

By unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

 

Susan Truppe moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 4.

 

At 3:41 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the analyst be tasked with preparing a draft version of the Committee’s Report to the House of Commons regarding Violence Against Aboriginal Women, with chapters and recommendations specifically focussed on the following topics:

• Aboriginal Poverty and Economic Growth
• Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women including related funding from 2006 to present
• Community Safety for Aboriginal Women as it pertains for Policing
• Family Violence Prevention and Community Healing including related funding from 2006 to present
• Property Rights and Economic Empowerment
• Aboriginal Women as Leaders

That the draft report be completed for consideration by members by November 29th, 2011 and that the Committee start the consideration of the draft report on December 6th, 2011.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee take into consideration the evidence heard and received on the study of violence against aboriginal women during the last Parliament in consideration of the current study on the same subject.

 

It was agreed, — That the meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 17, 2011 be cancelled.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hear witnesses on the study of abuse of older women at the meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 24, 2011.

 

At 4:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
