The Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics met in a televised session at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Pierre-Luc Dusseault, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Charmaine Borg, Alexandre Boulerice, Brad Butt, Blaine Calkins, Patricia Davidson, Dean Del Mastro, Earl Dreeshen, Pierre-Luc Dusseault and Colin Mayes.

 

Acting Members present: Mike Allen for Brad Butt, Dean Allison for John Carmichael, Hon. Denis Coderre for Scott Andrews and Joyce Murray for Scott Andrews.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Maxime-Olivier Thibodeau, Analyst; Erin Virgint, Research Assistant.

 

Witnesses: University of Ottawa: Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair of Internet and E-commerce Law; Teresa Scassa, Canada Research Chair Information Law, Faculty of Law, Common Law Section; Valerie Steeves, Associate Professor, Department of Criminology.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(h) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of privacy and social media.
 

Teresa Scassa, Michael Geist and Valerie Steeves made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:40 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:42 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Dean Del Mastro moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera .

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Mike Allen, Blaine Calkins, Patricia Davidson, Dean Del Mastro, Earl Dreeshen, Colin Mayes — 6; NAYS: Charlie Angus, Charmaine Borg, Alexandre Boulerice, Denis Coderre — 4.

 

At 12:43 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:44 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee travel to Washington D.C., from October 3 to October 5, 2012, in relation to its study on privacy and social media.

 

At 1:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
