The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 8:48 a.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, Merv Tweed, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Malcolm Allen, Alex Atamanenko, Ruth Ellen Brosseau, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, LaVar Payne, Francine Raynault, Blake Richards, Brian Storseth, Merv Tweed, Frank Valeriote and Bob Zimmer.

Acting Members present: Earl Dreeshen for Randy Hoback and Pierre Nantel for Malcolm Allen.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst ; Khamla Heminthavong, Analyst.

Witnesses: Canadian International Grains Institute: Rex Newkirk, Director, Research and Business Development. Canola Council of Canada: Jim Everson, Vice-President, Corporate Affairs. Alberta Wheat Commission: Rick Istead, General Manager. Barley Council of Canada Working Group: Brian Otto, Chairman.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, the Committee commenced its study of agricultural and agri-food products supply chain (grains and oilseeds).

Rex Newkirk and Jim Everson made statements and answered questions.

At 9:42 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:48 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Rick Istead and Brian Otto, by videoconference from Calgary, Alberta, made statements and answered questions.

At 10:44 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
