Introduction of Government Bills

Pursuant to Standing Orders 68(2) and 69(1), on motion of Mr. Merrifield (Minister of State (Transport)) for Mr. Nicholson (Minister of Justice), seconded by Mr. O'Connor (Minister of State), Bill C-53, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (mega-trials), was introduced, read the first time, ordered to be printed and ordered for a second reading at the next sitting of the House.


Presenting Reports from Committees

Mr. Richardson (Calgary Centre), from the Standing Committee on International Trade, presented the Third Report of the Committee (Bill C-8, An Act to implement the Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Agreement on the Environment between Canada and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Agreement on Labour Cooperation between Canada and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, without amendment). — Sessional Paper No. 8510-403-119.

A copy of the relevant Minutes of Proceedings (Meetings Nos. 27 to 32) was tabled.

Questions on the Order Paper

Pursuant to Standing Order 39(7), Mr. Lukiwski (Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons) presented the supplementary return to the following question made into an Order for Return:

Q-258 — Mr. Bains (Mississauga—Brampton South) — With regard to the Economic Action Plan: (a) how has the government informed Canadians about the Economic Action Plan; (b) how much has the government spent on announcements relating to the Economic Action Plan; (c) what is the breakdown of these expenses by event and by type of expense; (d) how much has been spent on (i) consultants, (ii) flights, (iii) media and logistic companies, (iv) props and backdrops; (e) what are the names of companies contracted and the amount of funds spent for media consultants, logistics, props, and advertising; (f) what is the breakdown of this funding by city; (g) how much has the government spent producing advertisements; (h) when have these advertisements aired; and (i) what are the events and what are the total costs for each? — Sessional Paper No. 8555-403-258-01.

The Order was read for the second reading and reference to a legislative committee of Bill C-32, An Act to amend the Copyright Act.

Mr. Clement (Minister of Industry), seconded by Mr. Moore (Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages), moved, — That the Bill be now read a second time and referred to a legislative committee.
