The Standing Committee on National Defence met in camera at 10:02 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Hon. Maxime Bernier, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Maxime Bernier, Ray Boughen, Peter Braid, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Laurie Hawn, LaVar Payne and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Mario Laframboise for Pascal-Pierre Paillé and Marcel Proulx for Hon. Keith Martin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the request by four (4) members of the Committee to undertake a study of the next generation of fighter aircraft.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee proceed to sit in public.

 

At 10:04 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:07 a.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

Claude Bachand moved, — That the Committee undertake a study of the next generation of fighter aircraft, the role and mission that would be assigned to this aircraft, the reason the government believes that a sole source contract is appropriate and the terms and conditions to be included in such a contract, such as a guarantee of regional economic benefits.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

Claude Bachand moved, — That the Committee invite the Minister of National Defence, the Minister of Industry and the Minister of Public Works to appear in relation to its study of the next generation of fighter aircraft.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

Ujjal Dosanjh moved, — That the Committee invite the President of the Treasury Board to appear in relation to its study of the next generation of fighter aircraft.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

It was agreed, — That witness lists for the Committee’s study of the next generation of fighter aircraft be submitted to the Clerk by Friday, September 3, 2010.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, in conjunction with the Clerk and Analysts, prepare a work plan for the Committee to hear witnesses on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 as part of its study of the next generation of fighter aircraft.

 

At 10:39 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
