The Standing Committee on Health met by videoconference at 7:36 a.m. this day, in Room 853, 131 Queen St., the Vice-Chair, Joyce Murray, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Nicolas Dufour, Kirsty Duncan, Megan Anissa Leslie, Luc Malo, Cathy McLeod, Joyce Murray and Tim Uppal.

 

Associate Members present: Carol Hughes.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marie Chia, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Université de Montréal: Claude Emond, Toxicologist, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. Université du Québec à Montréal: Françoise Maniet, Lecturer and Research Agent, Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la biologie, la santé, la société et l'environnement (CINBIOSE) and Groupe de recherche en droit international et comparé de la consommation (GREDICC). Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail: Claude Ostiguy, Director, Research and Expertise Support Department. National Institute for Nanotechnology: Nils Petersen, Director General, National Research Council Canada. As an individual: Mihail Roco, Senior Advisor for Nanotechnology, National Nanotechnology Initiative, National Science Foundation.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, the Committee commenced its study of the potential risks and benefits of nanotechnology.
 

The Committee proceeded to a round table discussion.

 

Claude Ostiguy, Nils Petersen, Claude Emond, Françoise Maniet and Mihail Roco by videoconference from Washington, D.C. made statements and answered questions.

 

At 8:50 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
