The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in a televised session at 3:44 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Raynald Blais, Hon. Gerry Byrne, Fin Donnelly, Randy Kamp, Yvon Lévesque, Tilly O'Neill-Gordon, John Weston and Rodney Weston.

 

Acting Members present: Sukh Dhaliwal for Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Russ Hiebert for Blaine Calkins and Hon. Judy Sgro for Scott Andrews.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Gail Shea, P.C., M.P., Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: David Bevan, Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries and Aquaculture Management; George Da Pont, Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard; Claire Dansereau, Deputy Minister; Michaela Huard, Assistant Deputy Minister, Human Resources and Corporate Services; Roch Huppé, Chief Financial Officer; Paul Sprout, Regional Director General, Pacific Region.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2010-2011: Votes 1, 5 and 10 under FISHERIES AND OCEANS referred to the Committee on Wednesday, March 3, 2010.
 

The Chair called Vote 1 under FISHERIES AND OCEANS.

 

The Minister made a statement and, with Claire Dansereau, David Bevan, George Da Pont and Roch Huppé, answered questions.

 

At 4:53 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:00 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Claire Dansereau, David Bevan, Michaela Huard and Paul Sprout answered questions.

 

Fin Donnelly moved, — That, in response to information presented to the Committee by Trevor Swerdfager, Director General for Fisheries and Aquaculture Management at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Committee ask Alexandra Morton to appear before it at the next most convenient possible occasion in order to speak on the issue of sea lice and their impact on the salmon stocks as well as to respond to the testimony given by representatives from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
