The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Don Davies, Mark Holland, Andrew Kania, Dave MacKenzie, Phil McColeman, Serge Ménard, Rick Norlock, Robert Oliphant, Brent Rathgeber and Blake Richards.

 

Acting Members present: Robert Vincent for Maria Mourani.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Tanya Dupuis, Analyst. House of Commons: Wayne Cole, Legislative Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness: Mary Donaghy, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Community Safety and Partnerships Branch; Agnès Levesque, Counsel, Legal Services; Clifford Yumansky, Director, Corrections and Community Development. Department of Justice: Douglas Hoover, Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section. Department of National Defence: Glen T. Rippon, Major, Directorate of Law, Military Justice Policy and Research 2; Alex Weatherston, Counsel, Office of the Legal Advisor.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Monday, June 8, 2009, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-34, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and other Acts.
 

The witnesses answered questions.

 

At 9:39 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:41 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee continue its study of Bill C-34 upon return of the House after the summer adjournment.

 

At 9:45 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:48 a.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

At 9:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
