The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Sue Barnes, Garry Breitkreuz, Bonnie Brown, Gord Brown, Hon. Roy Cullen, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Dave MacKenzie, Colin Mayes, Serge Ménard, Rick Norlock, Penny Priddy and Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Philip Rosen, Principal; Mathieu Stanton, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded in camera to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hold an in camera meeting on June 2, 2008, to discuss a report on the Taser.

 

It was agreed, — That within the context of its Contraband Tobacco study, the Committee hear from Aboriginal representatives on June 4, 2008, and from the Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers' Marketing Board on June 9, 2008.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Public Safety and National Security to appear on June 9, 2008, in the context of its Tobacco contraband study.

 

At 4:14 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:14 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Serge Ménard moved, — That the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security recommend to the Government that it implement the necessary measures so that when air carriers screen passenger identification as required by the Aeronautics Act, to determine whether a passenger is on the list of specified persons (generally referred to as the “no-fly list”), they will ask minors travelling alone whether they have a letter or other document attesting to the consent of their parents or guardian to their leaving Canada by air, as recommended by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 7.

 

Serge Ménard moved, — Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), that the following motion be reported to the House at the earliest opportunity: That the Committee recommend that the Rivière Rouge Mont Tremblant International Airport (YTM) be recognized as an airport of entry into Canada, without customs charges being imposed for regular commercial flights, as is the case with the airports in Montreal and Quebec City.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 0.

 

At 4:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
