The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymond Gravel, Luc Harvey, Pierre Lemieux, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Brent St. Denis.

 

Acting Members present: Ron Cannan for Pierre Lemieux.

 

Other Members present: Thomas J. Mulcair.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst; Élise Hurtubise-Loranger, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Assemblée communautaire fransaskoise: Denis Desgagné, Director General. Fédération Franco-TéNOise: Fernand Denault, President.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Richard Nadeau, it was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Official Languages obtain:

1) the following information from CFB Borden and its training institutions:

• the list of courses offered in all CFB Borden schools;

• the list of textbooks for each course with the title and language in which it is written;

• the courses offered in French only;

• the courses offered in English only;

• the bilingual courses offered;

• how often these courses are offered;

• the number of students required for the course to be held (if not the same number, then the number for English, French and bilingual courses);

• the courses held over the past two years and the number of anglophone and francophone students in each course;

2) the following information from the Canadian Forces regarding long-distance education:

• the list of courses offered;

• the language in which each course is offered;

• the language in which the course material for each course is available;

• whether each course allows the student to start and end, that is, to graduate, in the language of the initial course.

 

On motion of Richard Nadeau, it was agreed, — That the Committee be granted an operational budget of $31,650 for its study of the Canada-Community Agreements.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on March 13, 2008, the Committee commenced its study of the Canada-Community Agreements.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:55 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
