The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Gary Schellenberger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Dean Del Mastro, Hon. Hedy Fry, Luc Malo, Maria Mourani, Francis Scarpaleggia, Gary Schellenberger and Bill Siksay.

 

Acting Members present: Larry Miller for Ed Fast, Joyce Murray for Hon. Denis Coderre and Hon. Raymond Simard for Hon. Andy Scott.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Lara Trehearne, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Maria Mourani moved, — That the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage undertake a study on the living conditions of artists and issue recommendations on measures the federal government could take to improve these conditions.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Dean Del Mastro moved, — That the motion be amended by adding the words “and table a report in the House with their findings and recommendations” after the word “conditions”.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Dean Del Mastro and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 10; NAYS: 0.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Dean Del Mastro, Hedy Fry, Luc Malo, Maria Mourani, Joyce Murray, Francis Scarpaleggia, Bill Siksay, Raymond Simard — 8; NAYS: Jim Abbott, Michael D. Chong, Larry Miller — 3.

 

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage undertake a study on the living conditions of artists and issue recommendations on measures the federal government could take to improve these conditions and table a report in the House with their findings and recommendations.

 

Bill Siksay moved, — That the Committee travel to Vancouver in relation to its study on the dismantling of the CBC Radio Orchestra, on CBC/Radio Canada’s commitment to classical music and the changes to CBC Radio 2.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 1.

 

At 5:09 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
